The first question that I get from individuals that have been diagnosed with diabetes is always about what to eat or avoid to control diabetes. Yes, food play a great part in diabetes management. However, it is not only about the food. Diabetes is also about modifying some of our lifestyle behaviors like increasing physical activity, reducing risk (smoking cessation) and stress management.
In reference to the food, there is no 'diabetic diet'. You can still eat the food you enjoy, while choosing the right quality and quantity of food. A healthy meal should contain the 3 main nutrients, which are: carbohydrates, proteins and fats. A diabetes educator or dietitian can help you determine the right amount that is right for you.
